The early form of Japanese literature, poetry, emerged in the seventh century on the basis of the acceptance of Chinese character culture as the basis for Japan’s ancient transition from an unwritten to a written civilization. From the beginning of Japanese poetry, there existed both Kanshi and waka, although most literary history writings have a obvious “temperature difference” in their evaluation and attitude toward poetry in these two languages. To understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to return to the historical context of Japanese acceptance of Chinese character culture, and to identify the relationship between Chinese poetry, represented by the Kaifūsō, and waka, represented by the Manyōsyū, not as opposing or inferior, but as a mutual achievement.
