The early 20th- century China witnessed the surfacing of the first group of women translators in the Chinese history and a gradual shift from complete ignorance of the difference between indirect translation and direct translation to the theoretical consciousness of the merits and demerits of indirect translation in 1920 s.This article explores the women translators' awareness of indirect translation and their related translation activity in this given period by means of qualitative and quantitative research methods.Their pioneering recognition of indirect translation contributed to the construction of modern translation norms in the early 20th- century China.
