Based upon an analysis of 63 American and British brand names ranked among the world's 100 most valuable brands in 2004, this paper makes a discussion about phonetic features of brands' English names with special reference to letter number, syllable number and initial sound. The results show that most brands' English names under discussion consist of four to nine letters and two to three syllables and begin with consonants, especially stops, fricatives and the bilabial nasal. The paper points out that these phonetic features can be accounted for not only phonetically but psychologically.
