摘　　要： 严复、林纾的翻译之所以能产生巨大的社会效应 ,与他们根据社会需要及读者接受能力对文本和信息传递方式作出理性选择密切相关。选定翻译文本之后 ,采用哪种信息传递方式加以译述 ,应该充分考虑读者的接受能力。翻译根源于人类交流文化、传播文明的需要 ,翻译活动只有遵循一定的社会规范 ,重视语言与文化的时尚性 ,才能使翻译成为有意义的社会行为。可见 ,评价翻译 ,不仅要着眼于原著、译著与译者的关系 ,更要着眼于译品所产生的社会效应。译品价值如何 。 The great social effect of Yan Fu's and Lin Shu's translation wasclosely related to their rational choice of texts and modes of intelligence transmission according to social demands and readers' reception. Translation has its source in human demand for cultural exchange and civilization spread. Only when translation activities follow the social norm and pay enough attention to the trend of language and culture, can trnaslation become a meaningful social behaviour. To evaluate translation, one should consider the social effect of the version more than the relationship between the original, the translation and the translator. The value of translation should be mainly measured from the angle of whether it suits the demand for social progress.
