Taking the Opium War as its theme, An Insular Possession by Timothy Mo, an Anglo- Chinese writer, vilifies and denigrates China and the Chinese.. Taking sides almost entirely with the British aggressors, Mo in his interpretation of historical materials leaves abundant signs of simply piecing together historical data so as to make up a story. This can only be explained by a profound identity anxiety on his part resulting from his hybrid parentage and confused sense of belonging.
