There are different kinds of ordinary tragedies caused by the discords between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law in modern Chinese literature. But most researchers have confined themselves to such tragedy analysis in terms of social politics and morals. If we apply Freud's psychoanalysis of the subconsciousness of the son and the mother, we may find it is the Oedipus Complex that places the mother in a dilemma in her son's marriage, and results in her resentment, jealousy, hence afflicting her daughter-in-law. Her son does not mediate but intensifies the discord as a result of his Oedipus Complex. Inevitably, tragedy ensues. The evils of the feudal clan system are as clear as day in its extremely inhibiting and depriving of the women's sexual rights.
