The paper studies the relationship between context and pragmatic abilities. It retrospects the research of context and argues that pragmatic abilities were misunderstood, and that the exhibition of ones pragmatic abilities is determined by a knowledge about context. In the framework of context studies, pragmatic abilities is defined to contain two parts, (i) the ability to identify the context under which an utterance is performed, and (ii) the ability to understand the intended meaning of the speaker by that particular utterance. As a result, it is proposed that contextual knowledge be taught to foster pragmatic abilities for L2 learners.
