摘　　要： 近年来,汕头埠成为笔者田野调查的主要区域,其间搜集了不少碑刻、老照片、契约等相关材料。根据文献记载和田野调查所得,笔者发现,位于汕头东南出海口妈屿岛的两座天后宫颇有故事,这两座天后宫与妈屿这一蕞尔小岛的历史和社区性质的变迁有着密切的联系。本文试图通过对这种关系的考察,说明东南沿海地区的天后信仰如何在明末以来近四百年的各式场景中,不断变换其功能与意义。另外,诚如法国地理学家阿·德芒戎所指出:“人类聚居和劳动的这些生活区的范围很不相等,可以是简单的村庄,也可以是广大的地域。它们就形成了环境,在这些环境的内部分布着地理现象。各个环境以其专有的特点,给予人类一种集中表现的、独特的印象……为清楚地看到一般现象的全貌,最好从特殊的、局部的现象开始去观察这个区域内包含的特殊植物、居民……去明确由某一片土地和一群人类的结合而产生的有活力的东西。”但从长时段的角度剖析海岛的个案研究并不多,本文拟就对此做一探讨。一 18世纪以前的妈屿岛海域与天后宫妈屿岛又名放鸡山,位于广东省东南部的汕头市东南出海口,距市区3.6海里,面积约1平方公里。全岛最高处海拔46米,岛上大部分是山坡地,没有田园,原先是一个荆棘丛生的荒岛。 This paper hopes to be able to explain how the historical form of island belief and different characteristics among mainland beliefs are shown,by taking as examples the Ma Gong story on Lantau Island located in the southeast of Guangdong Province and historical changes of this island since final years of the Ming Dynasty,and discussing close relationships between folk faith and the regional history of Southern China Island.The entire article is divided into several parts:MA Lantau waters and Tian Hou Temple before eighteenth century,construction of new Tian Hou Temple and opening of Shantou,MA Lantau and Tian Hou Temple in the twentieth century,region activities on the island of MA Lantau in recent years and etc..It shows in nearly four hundred years of MA Lantau Island historical process,every sort of people took turns on stage and became main characters on the island,including commanders-in-chief of Nan ao Island,overseas pirates in Fujian,businessmen from Fujian and Guangdong Provinces,Japanese Army who invaded China,and Western World people who traveld from long distances,as well as in the contemporary time,a great many local officials.Each of them,in their own arena,has deduced different stories around the island s mother palace.
