摘　　要： 1.0 一门不易定义的学科 1.1 英文style一词有多义:有人将它理解为“风格”,既可指一个作家运用语言的特色,又可指某个时代出现的文風;既可指某种体裁作品的语言特征,又可指某一篇作品的语言格调和表现风格。 This is a brief survey of modern style study in the West, written for those who have been both fascinated and confused by the discipline known as stylistics The paper traces the devious course stylistics has traversed in the present century and introduces major controversies within the field. The author argues that literary stylistics will most probably remain a controversial subject as long as there exist different approaches to the subject. As many as 10 different approaches are cited, including Bally, Jacobsen, Halliday, Fowler, and others.
