Abstract It is the author's intention to prove, through a study of two Chinese versions of the English poem “Brahma”by Emerson,that translating is a bi-cultural,as opposed to a purely bilingual event, and that translation activities functioning at the upper end of the cultural scale (such as literary translation) are often conditioned more by TL cultural loadings than by the transfer of linguistic elements from the SL. This study will show that cultural transfer in translation is far from a uni-directional process, and that translations are as much, if not more, conditioned by the TL culture as they are by the SL culture.
