As the birthplace of liberalism,Europe has all along been known for its economic prosperity, excellent welfare, active thinking and cultural prosperity. In his latest novel Sérotonine,Michel Houellebecq,a famous contemporary French writer, shows a picture of the economic reality of all European industries in decline,a situation of people’s livelihood in European society in distress, and a scene of indifference and disillusionment in European culture.Michel Houellebecq’s novel continues the French literary intervention tradition that has been lost since Sartre, deeply analyzes the symptoms of western neoliberalism, presents an image of Europe that is trapped in crisis and beyond redemption, and foretells the decline of the western world. The novel provides useful warnings and references for the development of modern society by deconstructing the modern diseases and their consequences in the western world.
