摘　　要： 传统上一直认为表示转折是"而"的语法意义之一,本文结合对比和转折两个语义关系范畴的区别性特征,对该用法中"而"的句法及语义特点进行了重新分析,认为其语法意义是表示对比。转折关系语段和"而"所标记的关系语段在前后项的意义均衡性、前后项语义内容的对等不兼容性及主要表达功能等方面都有明显的区别。当对比前项在特定条件下能够推出与对比后项构成反对关系的蕴涵时,对比关系具有转化为转折关系的可能。 It＇s generally recognized that one of the grammatical meanings of the modern Chinese conjunction er （而） is to show a turn in the course of events. But this opinion is not precise enough. Through a series of in - depth analysis, a new viewpoint is put forward as follows： According to the major differences between contrasting and transitional sentences, the grammatical meaning of what people generally think as a conjunction to show a turn is actually to indicate contrast between the two parts it connects.
