The notion of“Yadong”,Asia s East or Asiatic East, conveys a peculiar identity strategy of decolonization. It used to be a parallel to“East Asia”.The disappearance of references to“Yadong”in Taiwan s post-World War II(WWII)political history indicated the abortion of decolonization in Taiwan. The paper begins with a critical reflection on the idea of“strategic essentialism”popular in the discourse of decolonization.Strategic essentialism urges the subaltern to deliberately adopt an essential identity as a discursive strategy to mobilize resistance. However, this would practically reproduce the binary of the colonizing and the colonized, and continue to embed the subaltern identities in the colonized consciousness. The paper relies on the notion of Yadong to re-theorize decolonization as a relational project,as opposed to binary.Empirically, however, the gradual disappearance of Yadong as a relational discourse during the Cold War indirectly testifies to the abortion of decolonization in Taiwan. The Cold War,pertaining especially to the American intellectual intervention in the conceptualization of the world through the fault line of its containment policy, contributed greatly to the substitution of East Asia for Yadong. In this paper,Yadong is a geo-cultural lens, while East Asia connotes strategic purposes of various kinds. The latter concept echoed the discourse of the“Great East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere”,on which colonial Japan relied before and during WWII to justify colonialism as well as expansion.
