Reading through Wei Hui' s works, we can find their politics of identification very interesting: is it a renewal of the changed identity or just something stale covered with a new label? Is it a kind of localization used to resist globalization or to make good use of globalization? If Wei Hui is placed in the context of globalization and trans-nationalism and a probe is made into the changes of her identity, one cannot fail to discern the persistent self-gaze in both her Shanghai Baby and My Buddha. In addition, efforts must be made to see through the relationship of power in her identity.
