As one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the history of the United States, liberal arts colleges have been under the influence of social factors such as vocational education preference and enrollment dilemma since the end of 1970s.In order to maintain and enhance their position in the market,U.S.liberal arts colleges have made three entrepreneurial responses, which are both in the same line and further deepened.Among the three entrepreneurial reactions, the third one, namely the transition to a comprehensive university, has been the greatest.By contrast, the organizational template of comprehensive university has several advantages over the traditional organizational template of liberal arts college, especially in the cycle of adverse and uncertain market environment.Liberal arts colleges ensure a place in the market through organizational transformation, but also face the choice between money and mission and the disappearance of the diversity of American higher education system.
