Some Chinese scholars attempt to apply the classic fiction in the medieval political theology in England, "the king′ s two bodies", to modern politics in opposite ways. But this metaphor will give rise to the conflict between the conceptions of the organic state and that of the modern abstract state whether it is interpreted extensively in temporal or spatial dimensions. The problem of the abstract state is essentially one of the construction of the abstract sovereign people under the background of individualism. The crucial point of modern politics lies in the abstract and visual forms of the people and their relationship, and it is radically different from "the people′ s two bodies". For the popular sovereignty, the rational justification of political legitimacy enjoys its priority over the experiences of the sacred in political life. As a result, the continuity and identity of the modern political community are ensured by those normative principles grounding the construction of the sovereign people and the continuity of their institutional embodiment, not by the framework of the political theology behind the metaphor of "two bodies".
