Singing Yao folk songs is not only an entertainment, but also a way of spreading the "living fossil" of the Yao history and culture. Some folk songs, such as Migration Song, Letter Song and Guo-shan-gen(passing the foot of the mountain), describe the migration history of the ancestors of the Yao people. For example, in the lyrics of some folk songs, "Lechang in northern Guangdong" is such a major hub where the ancestors of Guo-shan Yao relocated and settled down after they crossed the rivers and lakes before they divided themselves into several groups and further migrated to Guangdong, Guangxi and Hunan, some even migrated to countries like Vietnam and Laos. The Guo-shan Yao folk songs in northern Guangdong are sung in local Iu-Mienh dialect, and the tune has distinct characteristics. Those folk songs provide significant references for studying the migration pathway of the Guo-shan Yao in northern Guangdong across various mountains of Nanling Mountains.
