In the cultural context of Catholicism in the late Middle Ages, the emphasis of the demand of the Ghost in Hamlet is not to revenge but to remember. By narrating the fate of the Ghost, the play reveals how the Reformation destroys the relationship between the living and the dead through the abolition of the doctrine of Purgatory and the customs and rituals it generates. Meanwhile,Hamlet's dilemma between the old faith and the new faith reflects the special background of religious culture of early modern England.
