摘 要: 田纳西·威廉斯的戏剧在上世纪四五十年代为他赢得了国际声誉,时至今日,这些剧作仍在世界各地上演。他的戏剧主题丰富,有特殊的节奏感,被哈罗德·布鲁姆称为"诗意的戏剧(lyrical drama)"。除本身的语言特色外,神话因素也构成了威廉斯戏剧独特的表达方式,在戏剧的结构、主题、人物刻画方面均有体现。用神话这一"艺术手法"创作的代表作品是《琴神下凡》,本文从俄耳甫斯神话出发,从主人公的拯救、求爱中的表现、主人公之死三个方面解读田纳西·威廉斯的剧作中神话因素在戏剧的结构和主题表现方面的巨大作用,为研究其类似戏剧作品提供参考。 Tennessee Williams has earned himself international fame for widely published and well adapted plays. Harold Bloom calls them "lyrical drama"for the reason that Williams' plays have special rhythms and meaningful themes. Besides the specialized language,mythical elements have become a unique "artistic device"for him to develop the structure,theme,and characterization in a play. Orpheus Descending is the embodiment of such a manifestation. This paper sets to analyze Orpheus Descending in three aspects:Val's salvation,his passive performance in love court with women and his death in the comparison with the Orpheus mythology,to discuss the strong effects of mythology in the composition of a play and to find an effective method of analyzing his other plays with similar characteristics.
