The past decade has witnessed a "new" narrative turn that promotes fragmented, interactive "small story" research in the international academia. This paper first introduces the idea and vision of "small story" and its applications in language education research. It then discusses how Chinese scholars in language education may adopt this approach with cross-cultural awareness and localized agendas. We argue that "small story" research that foregrounds fragmented, authentic narrative details can shed signifi- cant insights to language education in China. However, Chinese scholars who choose to do small story narrative research are encouraged to go beyond its single concern about identity issues, and seek to de- velop this new narrative approach by addressing practical problems in Chinese language education with contextualized empirical studies.
