Benito Cereno portraits a revolution of negroes, indicating that the human nature of negroes is the same as that of the whites, and that they desire no less liberty and equality as the whites do and that they share the same political wisdom and limits with the whites. Through a displeasing structure of the novel, Melville himself as a Cereno who is misunderstood always cries for a forthcoming new world where all men, black or white, are equal.
