The wig appeared in the Pre-Qin period, and developed constantly. The ancient wigs were mainly made of the hair of the dead or tortured persons, monks and nuns and those voluntarily had their hair cut. The ancient women were fond of thick hair and high buns and the creation of hairstyles needed wigs and artificial coiffures.Their love for high buns,in addition to the pursuit of beauty and the biological instincts, also symbolized the struggle for their own status. The prevalence of the high buns also boosted the demand for the wigs and artificial buns and pushed forwards the development of the ancient Chinese luxury market. The high profits made by wigs not only affected the aspect of the social and economic life, but also got the politics involved.
