A statistic analysis of 20,024 Chinese given names shows that male and female names demonstrate gendered physiology-, size- and markedness-related sound symbolism on the five dimensions of pho- netic information: initial sounds, ending Chinese vowels, all Chinese vowels, intonation, and numbers of syllabi, and also that the female names are significantly more marked. English given names exhibit the same gendered sound symbolism on the dimensions of initial sounds, stress patterns, numbers of syllabi, ending sounds, and nuclear vowels, and the female names are more marked too. The results are as follows: given names in both languages exhibit the same multi-dimensional sound symbolism despite different phonetic devices. The motivation behind this phenomenon includes factors of physiological characteristics and social psychology. This research provides new data to support the Universality characteristic of sound symbolism, and shows new insights into the naming in both Chinese and English.
