This article compares the remaking of classical texts in movies and TV plays in China and India. It discovers that in both countries, the themes of the storytelling are always constructed based on the tension between ideal, mission and reality, which represent a set of relationship and action mechanism between characters. The retelling of 'tradition' reflects the needs for internal integration of the contemporary nations.China and India have both chosen market economy as the major governance mechanism, and at the same time, have also opened up a new discourse mechanism for the cultural communities. In this sense, the 'national narrative' regarding modernity has to face the challenge of integrating 'tradition'.
