At the end of the 1950s, Li Yongliang and Chen Hanbiao, who were both Buddha sculptors, founded a sculpture commune in Chongshan Village by the Taihu Lake, which heralded the beginning of the contemporary woodcarving around the Taihu Lake. The nature of the sculpture commune changed twice, and sculpture talents who were trained by the two sculptors went out of the isle, and spread the woodcarving practice around the Taihu Lake, which gradually brought forth the circle of woodcarving industry in such places as Guangfu, Xiangshan and Dongshan.
