Archeological findings show that Cao Cao’s mausoleum at Gaoling was looted and extensively damaged. This was definitely not an ordinary case of grave-robbery, but rather one of deliberate destruction. The first of the robberies occurred during the time of the Rebellion of the Eight Princes in the Western Jin. The possessions Cao Cao left behind listed in Lu Yun’s letters to his brother Lu Ji roughly correspond with the items recorded in the stone stele excavated from the Gaoling mausoleum, and one may assume they had been stolen from the mausoleum. The truth may become clearer if we relate the destruction of the Gaoling mausoleum to a series of historical events that took place at the time and put them against the political background of the late Western Jin period.
