To the female characters in A Passage to India, different critics had completely different attitudes. Some maintain that women embody the Christian humanist image that Foster tried meticulously to create; some assert that “Foster often saw women as part of the enemy camp.” Some critics give little attention to Miss Quested, a minor character in the novel, and even misread her. From the angle of femininology and with the application of Lacan and Kristeva’s theory of psychoanalysis, this article attempts to interpret the underlying meaning behind Miss Quested and reveal the exploration of the female world made by Foster and his complicated outlook of masculinity.
