Hofstede finds in his research that any culture can find its place from the scale of individual- collectivism′ s cultural dimension, which, as the most important dimension in the comparison of cultures, is a key to cultures of China and the West. The various differences of Chinese and Western cultures can find overt or covert evidence from individual or collectivism. The present paper compares the cultures of China and the United States via their pop songs. In the course of the comparison, Hfstede′ s theory of individualism- Collectivism is employed to elucidate some particular differences- - , chiefly the differences between idealism and realism and between action- ism and passivism. In the two cultures, actionism- passivism can give light to the differences of the relations between humans and the nature, the different attitudes towards the past, present and future and the differences of self- display.
