摘　　要： 霍桑《红字》中的丁梅斯代尔是个内心世界极其丰富、复杂的人物。他外表神圣 ,内心却无比虚伪 ;他有至高无上的理想 ,却舍不弃世俗的快乐 ;他博爱世人却不能挚爱知己 ;他想袒露真实的自己 ,却由于内心的懦弱 ,还是走向了虚伪。他的宗教信仰和现实生活相冲突 ,他的内心世界与外在世界相矛盾 ,他的虚伪和他的真实相碰撞 ,这些矛盾相互纠缠、交织 ,成了丁梅斯代尔心中打不开的死结 ,他的灵魂和肉体忍受着炼狱般的煎熬 ,最终导致他走向毁灭。该小说最有价值的地方 。 Dimmsdale,a leading character in Hawthornes THE SCARLET LETTER,was a person whose inner world was rich but complex.He looked decent but sham actually.He had the lofty ideal but sought ease and comfort.He intended to be honest but did not make up his mind to practice.His religious belief was in conflict with his reality.Hence his mind and body were constantly tortured by these conflicts,which led to his death at last.The value of this novel lies in the good analysis and description of the psychological characteristics of Dimmsdale and so forth.
