Silk was a major item in China's foreign trade in ancient times. During the Song and Yuan periods, as a result of the government's strong support of the textile industry and its unprecedented openness, the silk trade in Guangdong experienced unprecedented prosperity. Though Guangdong did not possess a silkworm raising industry as developed as in some other areas in China, it enjoyed an ample supply of silk goods and an excellent geographical position. Thus its foreign silk trade prospered and it became a well-known center of overseas silk trade.
