This study compares Chinese and English on a developmental scale, utilizing four different age groups to examine the developmental trend of the perfective aspect used under narrative conditions. Results show that 1)the developmental trends differ greatly, with the usage by English subjects dropping substantially until the age of about 8years,while the usage of'le'by Chinese subjects increasing exponentially across the four age groups in a low percentage;2)the major differences across the two languages, particularly in the developmental trends, are believed to be influenced by the existent differences between them, with aspectual markers being optional under certain circumstances in Chinese, but not in English. Some of the existing differences result from the differences in grammar and form in the two languages.
