Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 - 1864) and Emily Bronte (1818 - 1848), are both full of romanticism. They comprehended the human beings from the point of civilization and nature, which is also the tradition of romanticism. They regarded the human beings as the victims of civilization who seek the comfort from nature. Both of the novels deal with the irreconcilable contradiction between the love of civilization and nature. The writers believe that in reality the love of civilization will eventually win, because society is vital to individuals, and no one can be free its domination; in spirit, the love of nature has its unique and glory. The meaning of life is in the course of constantly pursing freedom and love, which is the eternal topic of romanticist writers.
