The issue of human nature occupies an important place in Daoist philosophy. Daoism holds that the original man was born naturally of Dao, therefore man's nature is natural. However, the man inhabiting reality is far from being natural. There are two ways to recover man's natural nature: one can study the sages and the real men who retain man's natural quality; the other is to reconnect with Dao through "children". According to Daoism, the naturally born man, during its struggle for survival, often deliberately alter its own natural humanity and in the meantime transform the natural quality of other entities in the world. The result is a departure and fall away from the Dao not only for man but for the entire world. It is well-nigh impossible not to lose the Dao, but if man can sincerely study the Dao and abide by it, man is capable of communion with Tian and reclaiming the lost Dao. If man can rejoin the Dao by returning to it, then society and the world likewise can return to the Dao.
