Lucerne, the short story written in 1857 by Tolstoy, was one of the important works reflecting his early thought. Through the event of a street singer being refused and mocked by the civilized people, Tolstoy condemned the hypocritical and indifference of the civilized society, and entirely denied the significance of the civilization. In order to solve the social problem and reconcile the contradictions among people, Tolstoy believed that the abstract concept of "Eternal Moral" and "The Spirits of One World" could make people close each other. Tolstoyism was emerging from the novel. By close reading the details of this novel, this paper illustrated that Tolstoyiam played a positive role in the perfection of personal morality, and pointed out its limits in the understanding the humanity.
