Whether or not to avenge his father' s death has been at the centre of Hamlet' s predicament, and has been perplexing generations of literary critics for hundreds of years. This paper approaches the question from a perspective informed and broadened by the studies of the Bible and draws upon relevant studies done by the western academe and meanwhile offers a tentative comparison with Job' s predicament. After detailed analysis and reasoning, the author concludes that human being' s various attempts to control and plan their own fate amounts practically to nothing but futility and failure in a world where God or Providence is absent.
