Confucian influences on modem Chinese writers were extremely complex and farreaching, so we can even see Confucian elements in Lao She who had actually been converted to Christianity. A Christian though he was, Lao She regarded patriotism as religion throughout his life. Ba Jin once called him a great pa triot and a member of "Gede School" (literally Praise Singing School), but it was Lao She who shouted out the very question buried in the minds of modern Chinese during his later years : "I love my country, but who loves me?" This paper argues that if the Confucian elements are unveiled in his religious patriotism, we can get a deepened understanding of Lao She's tragedy.
