In the novel Water Margin, there are two episodes:one is that Lu Chih-shen,after being drunk, broke the Devarajas(heavenly guardians in Buddhism) Statues guarding the entrance to Wutai Mountain;the other is that he performed his amazing feat of strength by pulling a willow tree out of the ground in the Daxiangguo Temple. These two incidents can both find their origins in the classical fictions and folk tales from Tang to Song and Yuan dynasties."Pulling a willow tree out of the ground" originated from the legends about "Dali Devaraja pulling out the pillars" in Buddhist Mizong Sect while "breaking the Devarajas Statues" originated from the series of Buddhist folk tales like "Arhat teasing Devarajas(statues)".It is the element of Buddhist legends and cultures in the novel that makes the image of Lu Chih-shen appear so alive, divine, gigantic and remarkable.
