Based on the previous studies' conclusion that self-esteem is a significant predictor of third-person effect, this paper discusses the relationship between self-esteem and the third-person effect by dividing self-esteem into two dimensions: self-respect and self-efficacy. It reveals that audiences who report higher self-respect tend to over-estimate negative effect on others while those who report higher self-efficacy perceive self to be less affected. It argues that both self-respect and self-efficacy work on the self-other disparity and therefore both of them are likely to influence the third-person effect. It challenges some previous conclusions that self-respect or self-efficacy as others claimed is a better predictor than its counterpart.
