This paper, taking David Hawks' version of The Story of the Stone as example, expounds the inevitability of misreading, mistranslation and the relation of the translator to the original works, from the aspects of the difference between Chinese and western cultures, the subjectivity of the translator, and the characteristics of language and literature. The misreading and mistranslation on the part of the translator from one's own culture to look at, explain, and rewrite the other can not only enrich the culture, but also give life to the original works.
