A lot of thinking on human nature in the Tolstoy's novels was mainly aroused by Russian history and reality at the time. On the one hand, the traditional Russia is patriarchal society, and Orthodox determined the way of people's thoughts and feelings, which also affected Tolstoy whether his attitude is to accept that or to refuse that. On the other hand, Russia was deeply influenced by the spirit of enlightenment in European, which fluctuated the foundation of Russia traditional beliefs. It was significant that Tolstoy accepted the enlightening spirit, which provided the dimension of Tolstoy's thinking about humanity.
