Polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs) from waste electrical and electronic equipment(WEEE) which are ones of the emerging environmental contaminants, are highly concerned due to their persistency, ability of long distance transportation, bioaccumulation and potential endocrine disruption in biota. This paper summarizes the advances on the analysis techniques, concentrations and distribution of PBDEs in WEEE. Different analysis techniques have been proposed for PBDEs in waste plastics based on different sample pretreatment and technology of instrumental analysis. The detection frequencies of PBDEs in WEEE are very high, indicating their frequent use in the plastic components of electrical and electronic products. The PBDEs concentrations in many waste plastics have exceeded the threshold value of "RoHS" directive, or even much higher than the threshold limit. Because of the physical mixing of PBDEs(defined as "additive" type) with the parent polymers, they can be easily released from the products into the ambient environment upon disposal. Recently, recycling activities of WEEE are increasing and have become more and more important globally. However, the main recycling and disposal method of WEEE in China is crude and primitive, which has resulted in serious PBDEs pollution issues. For the WEEE recycling and dismantling areas in China, high levels of PBDEs are often found not only in atmosphere, water, soil, sediments and sewage sludge, but also present in tissue, blood, and milk of humans as well as a wide spectrum of aquatic and terrestrial wildlives. Unfortunately, PBDE levels in the environmental media generally showing an increasing trend according to the time trend analyses. In the last section of the paper, current knowledge gaps and further works on PBDEs are also discussed.
