This paper describes the writing process of Chinese characters performed by 4 overseas students of Chinese origin through video observations and interviews. Compared with foreign students, students of Chinese origin write much faster at the el- ementary level, while the writing speed of both groups are the same at the intermediate level. However, students of Chinese ori- gin make no structural errors, and only a fewer errors in strokes, which only appear at the elementary level. Both groups of students make writing sequence errors in both elementary and intermediate levels. The findings here reveal that students of Chi- nese origin present some unique features in the writing process of Chinese characters, though they share the general characteris- tics of all international students. From the cognitive and cultural perspectives, this paper argues that cultural identity plays an important role at the entrance level of the Chinese language acquisition for students of Chinese origin.
