摘　　要： 第三人称代词在英汉语言中作为连接语篇的重要手段，历来是学者们研究的重点之一。对于没有异议的前指照应，分歧主要集中在如何解释代词与被照应词之间为何能形成照应关系：而对于是否存在后指照应则始终众说纷纭。本文试图从Ariel的可及性理论与语义学的结合上对前指照应进行阐释；同时，以乔姆斯基的转换生成语法理论为基础，分析了后指照应存在的根据，指出：后指照应在英汉语言中都属于特例，不足以证明英汉语第三人称具备双向照应功能。 The third person pronoun, an important device used to achieve coherence between sentences, has always been one of the focuses of language research. On anaphora, research concentrates mainly upon the reasons why anaphoric references can be achieved between pronouns and referents whereas no agreement can be reached up to now on whether cataphora exists in both English and Chinese. The present paper, combining Ariel＇ s Theory of Accessibility with semantics, tries to account for the different usages of anaphora in English and Chinese and in the meantime, based on Chaomisky＇ s Transformational Generative Grammar, analyzes the basis on which cataphora is used, pointing out that occasional use of cataphoric references in writing, only a special case, does not provide enough support for the existence of the bi-directional reference in English and Chinese.
