This article focuses on the "Group of Eight(Go8)" in Australia, which was established as a remedial attempt to deal with the continued increase in academic staff alienation and a decline in collegiality caused by the trend of marketization and accountability. Go8 is a coalition of Australian research universities that aims to maximize the potential for collaboration in an environment of intense competition. The leading nine research-intensive universities in the Chinese mainland recently took an important step in developing a strategic alliance and network (China 9) for training talents and energizing innovative management. However, a number of important issues have not been addressed in the planning of this alliance, such as promoting research collaboration with government and industry, establishing a new system of faculty development and encouraging reform of evaluation system.
