This thesis proceeds from the academia' s argument in the relationship between citizenship and national identity. It both rejects the Splitting Theory that argues for a thorough segregation between the two and disapproves of the Maintain Theory that simply links the two together. Rather, this thesis proposes a Matching Theory, which assigns the logic matching and structural symmetric relationship between the two types of citizenship and dualistic structure of national identity on the foundation of the distinction of two types of citizenship (politics-law citizenship and culture-psychology citizenship) and the identification of the dualistic structure of national identity (national identity based on approving and national identity based on belongingness). Theoretically, the Matching Theory will transcend both the Splitting Theory and Maintain Theory; Practically, Matching Theory not only provides a strategic option for citizens in designating their national identity in a rational manner, but also provides a strategic guidance for a state in constructing the national identity.
