Based on data from a 2007 household survey in Beijing, this paper explores the current status of home-work separation of Beijing residents, measured by straight-line distance between job and residential locations, i.e. job-housing distance. We focus on comparing job- housing distance across different types of communities, types of property rights, and time periods when residential relocation happened, in attempt to shed light on possible institutional and structural forces underlying home-work relationships in transitional urban China.
