Min Shu(History of Fujian) by the Ming Dynasty scholar He Qiaoyuan records how in the Zhidao reign period(995-997) of the Northern Song Dynasty a scholar from Huai'an called Li Tingyu purchased a Manichean‘Buddha'image at a divination shop(husi) in Kaifeng(Bianjing) for the sum of 50,000 cash.Through an explanation of this historical item, the author discusses the spread of Chinese Manicheanism in the Tang-Song period and argues that the Manichean Buddha image which Li Tingyu purchased at the divination shop in Xiangguo Temple in Kaifeng was probably a painting and not a sculpture, and was probably a prototype of the later Mingjiao deity images. As Manicheanism spread through south-eastern China,it was gradually changed by Buddhism and Taosim from the Song to the Yuan dynasties, and eventually Manichean images were not pictures but statues.
