Like the contemporary Indian English fictions, Shadow Lines by Amitav Ghosh focuses on the political issues of South Asia, especially the national conflicts and communal violence. Different from the dominant writings of the period, it does not attribute the turbulence to the colonial rule but attempts to discover the origin from the epistemological perspective: The author traces the origin of national conflicts and communal violence from three aspects: the limitation of knowing the world as individuals, estrangement between individuals and the prejudices among communi- ties.
