Abstract: In Qin and Han Dynasties, Wufei(无非) denoted double negative. As Shi(是) was widely used in Wei and Jin Dynasties, Wufeishi (无非是) appeared and so Wu (无) and Fei (非) became more compact. In Tang and Song Dynasties, lots of predicate constituents appeared behind Wufei(无非), then Wufei (无非) came into being. In Yuan and Ming Dynasties, the definitive adverb Wufei (无非) appeared and became widely used, at the same time Wufei (无非) nearly disappeared in oral Chinese.
