The article studies dog's role and functions in Zoroastrianism and holds that the main function of dog in a funeral rite is to lustrate corpse demon, not to eat the corpse. In medieval times, Sogdian Zoroastrianism still kept contact with Persian Zoroastrianism and consult the latter for burial custom and other questions. So the author argues that '‘let dogs eat corpse’ within special yard in Samarkand' recorded in historical documents is not believable, but a mistake by the recorder.
